The participants are competing in two challenging exams, a practical exam on Tuesday, July 16 and a theoretical exam on Thursday, July 18.

The exams will cover a broad spectrum of biological disciplines, from anatomy to zoology. The main focus will be on molecular and medical biology:

25% Animal anatomy and physiology
20% Cellular, molecular and microbiology

20% Genetics, population genetics and evolutionary biology
15% Plant anatomy and physiology
10% Ecology
5% Ethology
5% Systematics

Theoretical Exam

The theoretical exam consited of 92 multiple-true-false questions and took place in two parts of 3.5 hours each.

Practical Exam

The practical exam consisted of four exams, each taking 1.5 hours. The general topics of the exams held at the IBO 2013 were:

  • Comparative and Functional Biosystematics
  • Molecular Cell Biology
  • Plant Ecology and Physiology
  • Evolutionary Ethology
